The nose is the only protruded structure in the face that plays an important role in the asethetic profiles which often influences one's impression to others, giving elegant or brave sentiment looking at the straight, gentle and well standing outline of the bridge of nose. Nasal deviation is classified as C-type, S-type, inverted C-type, inverted S-type, and generalized deviations based on the contour of the deviated septum.
Authors were faced with the limit on correction of the deviated nasal septum through endonasal approach. So far we performed accurate anatomical correction of the deformed whole region by complete exposure with open approach.
This study was subjected to 50 patients who recieved nose correction by open rhinoplasty at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Hanyang University Hospital from Dec. 1991 to Sep. 1996. Patients were distributed from 14 to 56 years with a mean age of 26.3 years. There were 34 cases of male and 16 cases of female patients, with a follow-up period from 14 to 70 months with an average of 36 months.
Authors have reached the following conclusion,
1. The nose, having a distinctive structure of cartilage and bone interlinking with continuity, is very important to get corrections on cartilage portion which contains the nasal septum as well as bony portion.
2. Severe septal deviation is results from displacement of nasal framework and cartilage.
This kind of septal deviation results in a high recurrance rate, unless corrected by open procedure for precise correction of bony framework and cartilage portion.
3. Auricular cartilages or calvarial bones have been used in the nasal tip or dorsum augmentation by its neccessity.
4. Transcolumellar scars were rather invisible.
